Got any UK based female friends that had to be nominated?

The First Women Awards, supported by the IMechE, recognise pioneering women across UK industry, who have also actively created opportunities for other women to follow in their footsteps.

Previous winners include women from UK manufacturing, science and technology.

Rosalind Murray, operations manager at BAE Systems’ Submarines Solutions division, won the First Woman of Engineering & Manufacturing award in 2008 and Helen Barrett, also from BAE, was recognised in 2009.

Paula Bell, finance director at engineering group Ricardo, was a winner in 2009. Bell was the youngest ever director at Rolls-Royce, (aged 26), first female director of Anglian Water and the first woman to be appointed director at Ricardo.

The IMechE is encouraging members to put forward nominations for the awards, which were created by the CBI and Real Business.

The First Women Awards are also supported by BAE Systems, Benenden Healthcare Society, Centrica, Harvey Nash, ICAEW, Land Rover UK and COINs, who have this year supported the “First Women in the Built Environment” category.

The awards will culminate in a prestigious ceremony at the Grand Connaught Rooms in London on 28 June.
